Priya grew in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. She went to high school in Camp Hill, where she was a bit of a nerd, and then to Carnegie Mellon University, where she remained a nerd. After spending a lovely 5 years in Pittsburgh she moved to Washington DC to attend medical school at Georgetown University. She is currently in her fourth year and excited to (hopefully) become a pediatrician in the near future!
John moved around as a kid, but spent most of his time in upstate New York and Massachusetts. He went to the University of Pittsburgh, in his dad’s hometown, and worked as a geologist in Massachusetts and Colorado before moving to Texas. After finishing his MS in geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin he moved to Houston to work for a large faceless corporation, which is where he is today!
They both still remember this, even though it was almost six years ago! As you may have seen above, both Priya and John attended university in Pittsburgh. While he was at the University of Pittsburgh, and she at Carnegie Mellon University, they ended up having several mutual friends while still never actually knowing of each other's existence.
Until, that is, a party of some of these friends on a cold night in the spring of 2009! John was still on crutches, recovering from a cycling accident, and so was much more intriguing than normal. They began talking, found each other quite agreeable, and John asked her out later that week on their first date! Priya's friends from CMU still probably know John better as John Crutch, in honor of that evening.
They spent the remaining two years of undergraduate together in Pittsburgh, and have since been bouncing around the country for various jobs, medical school, and graduate school. They are both very much looking forward to finally being reunited in the same place next year!
One weekend John took Priya up to Austin from Houston, seemingly to visit friends. Saturday morning John suggested going to some of our favorite spots around Austin (including Whole Foods for pastries!) and then suggested "hiking" up Mt. Bonnell. It was a gorgeous day, and the top of the park was pretty crowded with many other people that had a similar idea. They walked around for a bit, and were sitting on the cliffside looking over the river when it began to look like it was going to rain. Just before it started he asked Priya if he she would be with him for the rest of their lives, and took out a beautiful ring! Priya was very surprised, to say the least, but she was even moreso when their good friend Kaustubh popped out of the bushes! It turned out that he and John had planned to have him take photos of the entire thing, and she had even almost noticed him several times before. The newly engaged couple and Kaustubh then journeyed down the mountain for celebratory Taco Deli (an Austin favorite).
Sandip (Sandi) and Sukanya (Sue) Mukherjee along with Priya and Rohit have been residents of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania for over 17 years. While they have lived all over the U.S., Salt Lake City, Utah has special significance for the family. Both Priya and Rohit were born in Salt Lake City and the family enjoyed living out west for eight wonderful years with Roshan, their golden retriever.
The years since then in Camp Hill have been blessed with wonderful friends, momentous occasions (including many graduations), and King and Queen (their Shetland Sheepdogs). Thanksgiving of 2009 was particularly memorable for Sue and Sandi- This was the first year John spent the holiday with the whole family! The Mukherjees are originally from West Bengal, India and still have many family and friends in Kolkata, the wedding venue for Priya and John!
Nanni and Dadu (Priya's maternal grandparents) are beyond excited to have Priya and John get married in Kolkata. Raju Mama and Neelu Mami are Priya's uncle and aunt and Radhika is her cousin sister. Priya grew up spending many of her summers in India with her family and they are some of the most important people in her life. This wedding would not be possible without their help and we are so grateful!
Mike has been John's older brother for as long as they can remember, although he stopped being the bigger brother some time ago. In the summer of 2011 he married his longtime friend Elyse Andrews. Elyse and Mike currently live in Somerville, Massachusetts. Elyse is the curator of an excellent local news site, the Somerville Beat, while Mike is a partner of the design firm he founded, Upstatement. As you can see from their photo below, they're both really excited about India!
John's dad Marshall lives in Falmouth, Massachussets, where he works as an engineer for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Traveling to India won't be too out of the ordinary for Marshall, as his job has taken him all around the world and the oceans for the last 15 years. He and his wife Susie were college sweethearts at Duke University, and reconnected in recent years. They have a home in Winston Salem, North Carolina, near Susie's sons Brian and Adam and their families. Susie claims to love the hot weather, which makes Kolkata in May the perfect place!
John's mom Beth currently lives in Clifton Park, New York (No, it's not near New York City). She's the director of marketing for Maria College in Albany, NY, while Billy is an engineer for a regional network and IT company. They spend most of their free time golfing these days, although their 200+ pound English Mastiff keeps life interesting! (see picture below)
